STYLES, Archie-1959-60 copyIt is with great sadness that we announce the death today (9th January) of a stalwart of the Former Players Association – Archie Styles. Archie was born 29th October 1939 in Smethwick and joined the Albion from Smethwick Boys in March 1956, christened Arthur he became a professional in November of the same year. He made only 1 first team appearance against Fulham in October 1959, this was during the time he had to compete against the likes of Ray Barlow.

He left the Hawthorns in March 1960 signing for Wrexham. Archie’s career was mainly non league Hereford, Kidderminster, Stourbridge but he said that perhaps the most enjoyable time both socially and in football terms was the times he played for the All Stars Charity side alongside Stan Jones, Bobby Hope and many more. A reliable and regular member of this Charity team.
Archie was a gentleman and upon finishing football entered the world of commercial selling, always attended our AGM until dementia started to curtail his appearances followed by Alzheimers. Often was found on match day supporting the team he grew up to love.

Archie leaves a son Dean, daughter Kerry, grandchildren Tom, Shannon, Georgia, Laura & Kyle plus 4 great grandchildren, our sincere condolences go to them all.
