Great Detective work by Former Players Secretary Geoff Snape tracked down former Albion inside forward Colin Suggett and presented the ace goalscorer with his club cap.
‘Suggo’ made 165 first team appearances for Albion in a four year Hawthorns career from August 1969 to February 1973, signed by Wembley manager Alan Ashman ahead of the 1969/70 season, scoring 30 goals along the way, before heading off to Norwich City for five years, then returning to his native North East with Newcastle United, finally hanging his boots up in 1981 and taking up a coaching post at St James’ Park.
Colin made his Albion debut down on the South Coast at Southampton in August 1969 scoring both goals on debut in Albion’s 2 – 0 win over the ‘Saints’ – two of 12 league goals in that first season. Colin also scored three League Cup goals on the way to Wembley in 1970, before gracing the Wembley mud heap in March that year.
Geoff made the long journey to East Herrington, near Sunderland, to catch up with ‘Suggo’ where he now lives in retirement, and I’m sure Colin regaled many memories of his time at Albion as well as of course a stellar career in first class football.
Thanks for the memories Colin.
